20/5/2020 1 Comment Norwood-19 hemp seed? its potential to contain the largest CBD percentage in the market? Our last blog post was a huge hit! Y’all were very engaging and asked some great questions. One of my favorite questions was about our newest seed variety, Norwood-19. In the blog, it showed an image of the gorgeous new variety of hemp, which is now available in limited quantities.
With correct farming practices, a single Norwood-19 sed has the potential to contain 33.2% CBD. This is more than twice the amount of CBD found in most commercial hemp seeds. Currently we are selling the seed in packs of 5 for $19.99 with additional options to buy in bulk with limited quantities available. We are so excited about this variety and are grateful to be sharing the news with all of you. Check out our previous blog so you can grow this seed to its highest potential. -Dave and Gary

What you need to know- growing hemp yourself
Hello everyone, Spring is the time to take action on your winter plans. This year many of you are considering it's time to try growing hemp plants in your garden. Please check with your state agriculture department to be sure you meet their regulations. Colorado allows growing of six hemp plants per adult per house with a maximum of twelve plants at no fee. If you are wanting to grow more than twelve plants, Colorado has the rule of base fee and per acre for outside crops and a different price based on square feet for greenhouse growing. There are many germination methods for garden plots, I have enjoyed using a Propagation Kit, with a light. These kits can be found at some local flower shops as well as online. You want one with a lid which allows for 16 inches of plant height. By following this method below, I have had excellent germination ratios, 98 – 99%. When something works I have learned to not “fix it”. I use high quality planting soil with the plastic square divider that take 24 to 30 plants. Prepare the soil with liquid fertilizer. Fill as many squares as I intend to plant and add four extra to cover any that may not germinate. Moisten the soil by watering with fertilizer until water runs out the drain hole. After the water has drained and the soil is still damp each small square receives one seed planted ¼ to ½ inch deep and covered with a small dusting of potting soil. Finally, place the lid on top and turn the light on to keep the heat between 78 and 80 degrees F. The plants will start to peek at you in a week or two and should be allowed to grown in the covered kit. After two weeks, it is time to acclimate your plants. Acclimating your plants to the outdoors is extremely important to their survival. Because plants usually are grown in greenhouses, they've been pampered. They need to be introduced slowly to the elements of wind and intense sun. Initially, you will put plants outdoors only for short periods of time, perhaps for an hour. (If you see it wilting, put it back in the shade for a while). You'll want to set them in a semi-shaded area of the yard. Gradually, you will increase the time plants are kept outdoors; you also will gradually increase their exposure to sun and wind. After seven to ten days, with an outside soil temperature of 68 degrees these plants will be ready. If weeds have started in the garden, be sure to hoe them out before planting. You will find it very helpful to use a one year biodegradable ground cover, or be sure your lawn mower can be used between the rows. Plant the CBD starter plants five feet apart from each other. Each plant should be slightly mounded to avoid over saturation when watering. A drip watering system is very convenient, but not necessary. Drowning is one of the problems you will confront. Better to be light on water than heavy. You can expect the roots to grow to 2 ½ feet the first year and much deeper each following year. Along with the growth of roots, you can expect a production curve too. If you get half of a pound of flower per plant the first year you've done well. By the third year you may be pushing two pounds per plant. More about hemp next time. Dave and Gary 23/7/2019 0 Comments Taking Care of Your Skin With CBDAs CBD continues to grow in popularity, we are beginning to see this miraculous cannabinoid being used for everything. Whether it’s soap, shampoo, or CBD beer, people are using CBD daily. This can be contributed to the proven medicinal benefits behind the compound and it being the latest new “craze.” Lately, I have seen many new CBD products produced for skin care. These products are specifically applied to your skin to treat rashes, bug bites, dry skin, eczema, acne, wrinkles, cancerous moles, and many other ailments. For those that are unaware, our skin and hair have cannabinoid receptors. They act the same as the cannabinoid receptors found in our body and our eyes. These receptors are part of our bodies natural endocannabinoid system. The receptors allow us to absorb CBD into our body. The receptors in your skin are very effective when applying CBD topically. Recent studies are beginning to show positive results for CBD being used as a skin care treatment. The list of CBD products offered nowadays can be confusing. In this article, I will discuss the benefits, skin ailments, and products that are ideal for your skin. I hope this article can help clear up any confusion that you may have. Acne Acne is a common skin condition that produces what many call “pimples.” Acne occurs when our skin overproduces an oily matter called “Sebum.” Studies have shown that the “Sebaceous Gland” in our skin has cannabinoid receptors. These receptors absorb CBD which, in turn, monitors the lipid production. Therefore, limiting the amount of oil produced. This allows CBD to act as a “sebostatic agent.” CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory as well. This can be helpful for treating acne scars. CBD helps the scars and redness fade. These studies show promising evidence towards the use of CBD to treat and prevent acne. Many dermatologists are hesitant to recommend the use of CBD due to the limited amount of clinical research behind the cannabinoid. The research that has been conducted on CBD for acne is still in the beginning stages. As the cannabis plant becomes more legal, we will begin to see more research directed towards skin care.. Eczema CBD has been known to help treat dry skin. It can be beneficial for those suffering from common dry or cracked hands, and it can benefit those suffering from eczema. Eczema is a severe dry skin condition that causes redness in the skin. This is commonly seen on your arms and/or face. Eczema is caused by water loss in your skin and inflammation. Applying CBD to your skin can help your skin cells regrow at a regular speed. This helps your skin cells live longer. Which, in turn, prevents the spread of Eczema. In one study, scientists administered a topical CBD ointment to 2,456 patients. After the study concluded, all the patients experienced a decrease in their eczema symptoms. Doctors monitoring the study reported a 58.6% decrease in symptoms. The study lasted 38 days. The compounds found in CBD help treat dry skin, but the effectiveness of CBD is due to its natural regulation of body chemistry. For example, Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is found naturally in our bodies. PEA helps restore dry skin. PEA is not present in CBD, but CBD helps PEA become more effective. This is because CBD communicates with PEA to enable the compound. CBD can also increase the amount of Anandamide (AEA) that is present in the skin. AEA is used for pain regulation and management. The study mentioned above shows promising results for CBDs effectiveness in monitoring our bodies natural chemistry. Anti-Aging Year after year, many people seek out the next best product for preventing signs of aging on their skin. This could be wrinkles, stress marks, and even sagginess of your skin. If your skin appearance is important to you, then CBD may be an effective option to consider. Skin aging is caused by a reduction of collagen levels, oil levels, and elastin levels in our skin. As time progresses, our skin becomes less firm and drier. Our skin even becomes less elastic. These are all caused by a reduction in our skin levels mentioned above. Clinical research for the use of CBD as an anti-aging agent is limited. This is due to the current legality of the cannabis plant and the length of time needed to conduct the necessary studies. However, research has shown that using CBD topically has no side effects. There is evidence supporting the use of CBD as an antioxidant. This can help protect your skin from sun damage. Sun damage is a very common side effect from aging. CBD can help prevent the negative effects commonly seen from sun damage. As an antioxidant, CBD works to reduce the number of free-radicals on your skin. Free-radicals break down collagen much faster. As mentioned previously, collagen helps keep skin firm. Therefore, CBD can help keep your skin looking firmer longer. As mentioned above, aging skin is known to be dry. After you turn 20, your skin becomes drier each year. This is why CBD is so beneficial. As discussed in the “Acne” section, CBD plays an important role in the excretion of oil from the sebaceous glands. This helps keep your skin looking refreshed. CBD is an anti-inflammatory as well which helps keep wrinkles and stress lines less visible. Psoriasis Psoriasis is a common skin condition that creates a build up of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. The condition is an autoimmune disease that accelerates the life cycle of skin cells. The symptoms include red scaly skin patches that are quite itchy and painful. Those suffering from the condition have come forward about using CBD to manage their psoriasis. In a 2007 study published by the “Journal of Dermatological Science,” researchers found that when CBD was applied to the skin it prevented the overproduction of Keratinocytes, otherwise known as skin cells. This shows promising results, but the reason for how the CBD was absorbed is still somewhat a mystery. The Next Step If you decide that you want to give CBD a try, the next step would be choosing the form of CBD you want to administer to yourself. You need to consider what condition you want to treat. If you want to apply CBD to your wrinkles and stress marks, then you may want to consider using a salve. This is commonly applied directly to your skin. This can be in the form of a body butter as well. Typically, a salve is the most common form of CBD used to treat skin conditions. A salve is the best for applying topically to your skin. A tincture or oil form is commonly administered orally. This is the best form of CBD for treating mental illness and insomnia. However, some users will apply drops of oil to their skin topically which can produce similar results as the CBD salve. All in all, you need to consider the best form and method before using CBD. Always conduct your own research before buying. The consumption of cannabis products is the sole responsibility of the user. I recommend consulting with a doctor before purchasing CBD products for skin conditions. I hope you found this article informational and entertaining. Now you have the knowledge necessary to help you live a long and healthy life. Happy Hemping! I have heard so many moving stories about how CBD has significantly impacted people’s lives. This has been from those close to me and those that have reached out online. These experiences have led me to create a regular series that focuses on different stories people have had with the cannabis plant. These stories will be both inspirational and informational. The series will be written or recorded as a podcast. I hope you enjoy! On this series, I will be interviewing Dave Fausset. He is the Founder and Co-Owner of AP Sleeping Indian. AP Sleeping Indian makes full spectrum CBD tinctures, salve, and body butter that is hemp derived. All of the products have been grown and processed in Allenspark, CO. Dave began using CBD out of necessity. After sustaining a major injury, he was naturally drawn to CBD. He soon began making his own CBD products which has now turned in to AP Sleeping Indian. I don’t want to give away all the information in the interview, so I hope you enjoy Dave’s interview below. CBD Testimonial What experiences have other users, family and friends, etc., had when using your products? The first person to use our tincture for Lyme Disease reported having a little relief after a couple of weeks and found herself pain free after a month. Please keep in mind, Lyme Disease is a very complex issue. This same person had cataract surgery and she has had very limited benefit since the surgery. One fellow went to his doctor to arrange surgery for a foot pain. The doctor said the issue wasn’t bad enough to warrant surgery and he mentioned the problem to me. I suggested that he apply a drop of the 2,000 mg tincture directly to the pain area and rub it in. He now applies a drop regularly. He says the pain is gone for as much as 4 days at a time from one application. The most recent comment from a friend was, “the throbbing in my thumbs has stopped”, and this happened within 2 minutes of applying the salve. CBD Uses What is your preferred method of administering CBD? My preferred method is the one that works best for the issue I am experiencing. Having the freedom to use tinctures, salves, butters, lotions and capsules allows the user to make their own choice. My wife particularly likes the capsules, as she doesn’t like the taste of CBD. After sustaining your injury, have you started using different forms of CBD for different ailments? Oh, yes, I use tincture orally for a full body, quick assimilation and topically with a drop or so on a particularly painful area and rubbing it in well. I use the salve and body butter for things such as my recently dislocated shoulder, as well as arthritic conditions. When would a CBD user want to digest/consume CBD orally, and when would they want to use CBD topically? Using CBD orally is a great way to get the CBD benefits quickly throughout your entire body. It will activate the sensors throughout the body. Topically, the application lets you address a specific area of the body with a concentrated extra boost directly to that area. AP Sleeping Indian What is APSI’s goal? Our goal is to provide the best organically grown hemp CBD products. We use only Colorado grown hemp to provide a quality flower that has been properly dried and free of mold. The CBD tincture we make for human usage starts at 1,000 mg per ounce. Many companies advertise CBD. Some companies don’t show any level of CBD in their product. Having an even base point of 1,000 mg makes it much easier for the consumer to know what the starting point is. Fifteen drops of the 1,000 mg tincture will deliver 25 mg a day. We have grown accustomed to being told to take a pill, or two, without giving consideration to our individual weight, age, or health condition. With CBD you are expected to become the driver, and after a couple of weeks, you will be able to recognize subtle changes that will suggest an increase or decrease in the volume you are using daily. We do not add flavoring to our tincture. We know our customers have different tastes that they find pleasant. You will not damage the tincture by adding food grade, or essential oil grade flavors of your choice. We provide 3rd party test results for our products and proudly post those results, along with the terpene breakdown. The lab we use has no ownership, nor is there any cross ownership of companies. What is your long-term vision for APSI? Our products are made for the discerning user, and we intend to make the product available to those looking for a quality product and helpful answers to your questions. Our long term goal is to provide the best hemp for your use each and every year. What is your goal for this planting season? We have made arrangements for additional acreage and top quality cultivars. We are growing tests plants to provide direction for our 2020 growing season. What hemp cultivars will you be using this season? This season we are growing “Cherry” cultivars, primarily “The Wife.” We can’t give projections on the crops for 2020 and beyond, as they will be determined by our ongoing research. In this article, I will be covering the different ways to germinate cannabis seeds. Many people have trouble during the germination stage, especially beginner growers. I have compiled this guide to help you germinate your cannabis seeds in the most effective way possible. Following the steps below is the best way to increase your success rate. Throughout the article, I will cover the most ideal environment, water temperature, time length, equipment, etc. to use during germination. I have worked with farms on a large scale and on a small scale. I will cover the steps for each type of grower, whether you’re simply a hobby grower or an industrial hemp farmer. This guide will benefit you! Why Should You Grow From Seed? Growing from clones can appear more simple for first-time growers, but I do not recommend shying away from using seed. When you grow from seed, your plants are guaranteed to be more healthy. Plants that are grown from seed contain healthier roots. These roots start with a healthy tap root. A tap root is the central part of a plant’s root system. Growing from clones does not produce a tap root. Growing from seed will limit the amount of genetic variation between plants. This means that your strain will have uniform characteristics between each plant. Clones will begin to show signs of variation past the first generation of plants. Clones typically yield less flower at harvest as well. Small-Scale This section will directly apply to hobby growers and mid-scale cannabis growers. The steps mentioned below will work for hemp and psychoactive marijuana seeds. The equipment needed is listed here:
1) Fill cup with lukewarm water. Leave 1 inch of room at the top of the cup. Drop seeds into cup. Not all seeds will sink immediately. It may take some time for the seeds to completely sink. I recommend tapping the seeds with a pencil every 6-8 hours to push them to the bottom. Once seeds are completely submerged, wait 24-32 hours before moving to step 2. In this step, it is best to label your cup with the specific variety using a sharpie. 2) After seeds have been submerged for 24-32 hours, it is time to drain the cup. Simply pour out the water, slowly, making sure not to pour out the seeds. You may begin to see tap roots coming out of a few of the seeds. This is a good sign, as this means you have healthy seeds! Feel free to plant them if the tap root is long enough, if not, I recommend moving on to step 3. If your seeds haven’t “popped,” don’t fret, you will begin to see signs of a tap root after step 3. 3) Take 2 paper towels and run them under lukewarm water. Once paper towels are fully saturated, squeeze out the excess water. You want the paper towel to be moist, not drenched. Next, use sterilized tweezers to move seeds from the cup to the paper towels. Avoid squeezing the tweezers too hard. This may harm the seed. Once seeds are evenly spread out on the paper towels, fold over one side of the paper towel to create a sandwich with the seeds in the middle. I recommend placing the seeds in a sealed ziploc bag to create a humid/moist environment. This is ideal for seeds to germinate. Once in ziploc bag, place between 2 paper plates. Put paper plates in the same spot as the cups. Ideally in a warm, dark, and dry area of your house. Some recommend that this space has a temperature between 70-90 degrees fahrenheit. This process typically takes between 24-48 hours. Some people have experienced waiting as long as 4 days before their seeds germinated. I recommend checking the paper towel every 12 hours after the original 24 hour waiting period. 4) After the step above, you will begin to see your seeds “pop.” Healthy tap roots will begin to grow longer. Congrats! You have just succeeded in germinating your seeds. However, now is the time to plant the seeds! The next step will require organic seed starter soil and a spray bottle. You will use the ruler in this step as well. First, poke holes in the bottom of the cups, unless your seed pots have holes for drainage. Next, fill solo cups or seed pots with soil. Lightly pack the soil. Water the soil with a watering can or cup to ensure that the entire cup of soil is moist. When ready, measure a quarter of an inch from the eraser side of your pencil. Mark with a sharpie. Next, use the pencil to create holes that are a quarter of an inch deep. Once complete, use the tweezers to transfer seeds from the paper towel to the holes in the soil. Always drop seed in soil with tap root facing down! Once the seed is in the hole, lightly pack loose soil on top. Mist top layer of soil with water. 5) Once the seed is planted, it’s time to wait. Place the cup or pot outside into sunlight or under a grow light. Water the soil with a spray bottle to keep the soil constantly moist. During this step, I recommend placing a ziploc bag over the soil container to create a humid environment and prevent dryness. You will begin to see a seedling sprout within 1-3 days, sometimes even 5 days. So be patient! Large-Scale When conducting a large-scale cannabis operation, you may not have time to follow the methods mentioned above. This can be timely, and it requires additional labor. Although, following a similar method as mentioned above will increase your germination rate. With that in mind, I will discuss a few methods for large-scale operations to maximize their success rate and save time. The equipment needed is listed here:
1) Seeding trays vary in size, but they all share similar depths. In this step you will fill the seeding trays with soil. Make sure to lightly pack down the soil. I recommend watering the trays to ensure even moistness in the soil. 2) Once trays are packed, use the seed poker or pencil to create holes that are a quarter of an inch deep. 3) Next you will take the bag of seed and drop one seed in each hole. Make sure that the seeds are quality and dark brown. 4) Cover the seeds with excess soil. Makes sure the layer isn’t too thick. Evenly spread layer across the tray. 5) Mist the top of the trays with “mist” nozzle attached to hose. Maintain misting to prevent dryness. 6) Place seed trays under grow lights or outside in the sun. You may want to consider using a shade cloth in this step to prevent burning. Seeds are very sensitive during this stage. I recommend minimizing the direct exposure to the sun, especially if you live in a hot climate. 7) You will begin to notice seedlings pop up through the soil within 2-3 days. Record your germination rate per tray, to compare it to the seller’s germination rate listed on the label. Some growers may have the ability to seek restitution if their germination rate is lower then the listed rate on the label. Other Options Depending on the size of your operation or the resources available to you, there are other options for speeding up the process. I will briefly mention the new equipment below. Recently, we have started to see “seeding” machines that will pack your tray and fill the holes with seed. This drastically minimizes the labor needed and the time used. If you have the money, this could help speed up your operation. Some of these machines can seed more than 200 trays in an hour. They typically cost anywhere between $2,000-$15,000. There are low budget options available. The company “Seed E-Z Seeder, Inc.” offers many innovative products. I recommend the “E-Z Seeder.” This machine will vacuum your seeds into holes to then be placed on top of the trays. Once on top, you turn the vacuum off to let the seeds fall into each individual hole. You can find a video explanation here. What’s Best for You? All in all the method you choose depends on the size of your operation and your expectations. Are you a first-time grower? Do you have a limited budget? What success rate are you expecting? These are all factors you need to consider before deciding which method is best for you. I hope you found this article helpful. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions or post updates in the comment section below. Good luck with your crop! References

For those that don’t know, CBD is commonly derived from the hemp plant. The product is typically extracted as an oil and used as a tincture. Most CBD products will not produce a “high” feeling. This makes CBD an effective treatment for various diseases and ailments. Recently, CBD has been gaining popularity for its treatment of various mental illnesses. Most people first hear about CBD being used to treat anxiety. This is the most known mental illness among many people today. As CBD is becoming more and more trendy, people are beginning to wonder if CBD can “really” provide the benefits companies are claiming. Those that are just now learning about CBD wonder if it’s just another “fad” or “hoax.” I have written this article to explain the various mental health problems that CBD has been known to relieve. I hope the article will help clear up any confusion among newcomers and provide reliable evidence behind these claims. I have referenced various scientific studies at the end of the article that will help you continue with your research. CBD Cure-All In this section. I will briefly mention the various mental health problems that CBD has been known to relieve. I will only go into detail on a few throughout the article. Through animal testing and studies on humans, scientists believe that CBD can benefit those suffering from schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosis, substance abuse disorder, and even symptoms of autism. I will provide additional detail focusing on anxiety and depression. These two mental health illnesses impact the most people compared to other mental illnesses. Anxiety affects over 40 million people in the U.S. alone. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 300 million people suffer from depression worldwide. These numbers are shocking. Many of those suffering don’t seek help, and if they do, they are prescribed medications that can lead to additional problems like addiction. Anxiety CBD and even psychoactive marijuana have shown promising results for those suffering from anxiety. In one study, human models were given 300 mg of CBD. This caused a significant decrease in anxiety levels after a simulated public speaking test. In another study, 600 mg of CBD were given to patients suffering from social anxiety disorder. The subjects experienced a significant decrease in anxiety and showed less cognitive impairment. These positive results provide light into the therapeutic benefits of using CBD during clinical therapy. Many doctors will not begin to incorporate CBD into their practice until additional research is done. Depression CBD has been thought to alleviate symptoms of depression, but most studies have only been conducted on animal models. In a 2014 study, CBD acted as an effective antidepressant when given to rats. The same results were shown in a 2018 study when scientists found that CBD can produce rapid antidepressant effects, and these effects were sustained overtime. These scientists concluded that, “Cannabidiol induces rapid and sustained antidepressant-like effects through increased BDNF signaling and synaptogenesis in the prefrontal cortex.” Some readers may be more curious as to “how” CBD interacts with the brain to produce these effects. We now know that CBD creates a positive reaction to serotonin receptors in the brain. The compound produces these effects through its involvement with 5-HT1A receptors. Is it right for you? CBD is an effective compound that is beginning to gain popularity as an alternative medicine. Even though we are beginning to see promising evidence for the future use of CBD for treating mental health problems, we need more human research to determine if it is safe and effective. Recent studies suggest that CBD can provide an effective and safe natural treatment for various health issues. So far, we know that CBD has potential, and the compound is non-habit forming, meaning that users are not at risk of developing an addiction. Before deciding that CBD is right for you, consult with a doctor about how to use it and the risk of interactions with other medications. I hope you found this article helpful. As always, do your own research before using CBD. Happy Hemping! 22/5/2019 2 Comments CBD Dosage: People and PetsAs the CBD and hemp industry progresses, I have started receiving more and more questions about the dosage of CBD oil. Many people are unsure about where to start. Not only are people confused about their own dosage, but they are confused about the correct dosage for their pets. CBD is typically given to dogs, cats, and horses. This can be tricky, especially when you have multiple pets with varying weights. In this article, I will cover recommended starting doses of CBD oil for people and pets. The majority of the questions I have received are pertaining to CBD oil, usually taken as a tincture. I have written this article to help clear the confusion. Through my research, I have done my best to provide you with trustworthy resources. However, I am not a doctor. I do not intend to provide medical information and always speak to your doctor about health concerns. CBD Dosage for Humans Finding the right dose of CBD can be tough. There are a few things to remember when considering how much to take. First, there have been no known overdoses from using CBD. Scientists have concluded that the controlled delivery of CBD is non-toxic and safe to humans and animals. CBD does not impact a human’s heart rate or breathing. In one study, scientists found that “high doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD are reportedly well tolerated in humans.” Secondly, you need to understand that the FDA has not created a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI). This means that there is no official serving size. This is mainly due to the cannabis plant’s current legality. In addition, you need to know that the size of the dose depends on what you are trying to treat. Some people need a higher dose for higher pain. Others need a higher dose to reduce the size of their tumor. This will depend on your purpose for using CBD. Now that we have the basics out of the way, let’s get into the details. Finding the right dosage may take some trial and error. There is no universal dosage for all people. There are many factors that influence the ideal dose for you. This can be weight, body chemistry, and severity of the condition being treated. The concentration of the CBD being taken is a factor as well. Your body chemistry could be different from your friend. Even though you may be the same height and weight, the optimal dose between the two of you may be different. This is why it is always best to start small and increase gradually. Start with the ideal dose for your weight using a dosage chart. Begin observing the effects each day. Increase the dosage until your observe the desired results. It is always best to administer a dose as accurately as possible. CBD capsules are typically the most controlled and accurate, but many people don’t have the time to make them. Taking CBD from a tincture can be accurate when using a dropper. An average dropper is 1 ml of liquid. You can calculate the milligrams in a dropper by dividing the total concentration of CBD in the tincture by the number of milliliters in a bottle. A formula and example can be seen below. (Total Concentration of CBD in Tincture) / (Number of Milliliters in the Tincture Bottle) = Milligrams of CBD in a Dropper Example: 2,000 mg / 30 ml = 67 mg in each dropper CBD Dosage for Dogs and Cats CBD is very effective when given to pets. The dosage amount is generally the same for dogs and cats. As always, the same rules apply. Start small, and base your first dose off weight. I recommend starting with the dosage chart here. It is best to start between 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg for every three pounds. This should be given to your pet twice a day. Typically, dropped on their food. Also, sometimes it can be difficult to find a CBD tincture that your pet will consume. Make sure you do your research before buying. CBD for Horses CBD can treat various ailments for horses. What can be treated in a dog or cat, is typically the same for horses. Although, the size of the dose is higher compared to a dog or cat. It best to consult with a holistic veterinarian prior to administering CBD. From my experience, it is best to start with a base dose. Most people start with 40 mg per day. This can be taken all at once or twice throughout the day. Give your horse 40 mg per day for seven days. After seven days, if the desired results are not received, increase dosage by 20 mg. Remain at 60 mg per day for three days. After three days, observe the effects. If not satisfied, then continue on this pattern until desired effects are reached. CBD for Pets and People We know that CBD is very beneficial to our bodies as well as our pets. With time and patience, you will find the best dosage for yourself. As mentioned, it is best to start small and use a dosage chart based off weight. From there, begin to increase dosage based off desired effects and results. All of my recommendations are based off a suggested serving size. This may be different for each individual or pet. As always, do your research and consult with your doctor prior to using CBD. Many health food nuts, or those with active lifestyles are beginning to use CBD as a daily vitamin. This can be seen on social media as well. Many companies have ads with young people posing as they drop CBD onto their tongue with the mountains as the backdrop. Even though this side of the CBD market can be “glamourized,” there is still truth to the preventive care properties found when using CBD routinely. I decided to write this article to explain the reasons why people use CBD regularly. Throughout the article I will provide an in depth look at how to incorporate CBD into your healthy lifestyle. How We Absorb CBD Let’s start with how we experience the benefits. Many people use CBD daily as a form of preventive care. The reason CBD, and other cannabinoids, are so effective at treating and preventing illness is because of our body’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our endocannabinoid system has receptors for naturally occurring cannabinoids found in our body, as well as plant derived cannabinoids. Each cannabinoid gets absorbed by our receptors which creates the desired effects. This is why THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, will produce a euphoric effect when smoked. Essentially, the endocannabinoid system is what creates the many effects from the cannabis plant. Here’s a quote from, Bradley Alger, one of the leading scientists currently studying the endocannabinoid system, “With complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and virtually all of the body’s organs, the endocannabinoids are literally a bridge between body and mind. By understanding this system, we begin to see a mechanism that could connect brain activity and states of physical health and disease.” What can CBD Prevent? When CBD is digested, typically taken as a tincture, the CBD compound bonds with the receptors. This is what creates the desired effects used to prevent and treat illness. When taken regularly, CBD can reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative conditions. Upon others, this is a very common reason people take CBD routinely. Especially those with a genetic predisposition to one of the diseases mentioned above. CBD creates new nerve cells which can help maintain brain health. In a study released in 2017 by the “Royal Derby Hospital”, a single dose of CBD showed a reduction in blood pressure for healthy people. Through animal testing, we have found that regular doses of CBD can prevent and slow the growth of cancer cells. Through my research, I found that CBD can be used regularly for pain management. If you lead an active lifestyle, pain control can allow you to continue with your daily regimen. This can be helpful for elderly suffering from chronic pain. Using CBD to prevent pain can prevent stress or depression by allowing the elderly to live the lifestyle they desire. CBD has also been known to prevent anxiety in those suffering from PTSD. It can prevent seizures, skin conditions, stress, diabetes and it can even spur new bone cell formation which can prevent broken bones. Using CBD for a Healthy Lifestyle As you can see, CBD is effective at preventing disease and illness. If you were unaware of the preventive properties mentioned above, then you may not know how to incorporate CBD into your life. CBD can be offered in many different products. This could be in the form of gummies, tinctures, topicals (like salve or body butter), or even flower, to be smoked. These can all be great options, but you want to find what’s best for you. If you are very conscious of your body and lead a healthy lifestyle, digesting CBD orally may be the best option. There are no negative health effects from taking CBD as a tincture or oil form. This can allow your body to benefits from the full effects. I recommend using full spectrum CBD, instead of CBD isolate, more information on the difference can be found here. Full spectrum CBD contains all the other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. When used together, users experience an “Entourage Effect” that enhances the effects of each cannabinoid. Most full spectrum CBD contains less than 0.3% THC, which will not get the user “high.” CBD shows significant promise for preventing illness and disease. These are just some of the diseases we know CBD can prevent. As time goes on, and the war on drugs comes to an end, we will begin to see more studies and professional research conducted on the effects from CBD and cannabis. As of now, we know CBD can be very beneficial for those striving to live a healthy lifestyle. Just as people focus on their diet and exercise daily, CBD should be included in that equation as well. I hope you enjoyed my article on CBD for a healthy lifestyle. Stay tuned for more information on the uses of CBD and hemp. Happy hemping! I know that many farmers are beginning to plant their fields in hopes of a successful season. As the hemp and CBD market is well positioned for growth, many growers are rushing to the industry. Some may even call it a “green rush.” The U.S hemp industry is expected to reach $2.6 billion by 2020. This is great news for farmers, but state regulators are struggling to keep up. Many state regulators only have the resources to oversee the cultivation process. This means that there is no regulation for the processing and distribution of hemp. Those that process CBD in Colorado, for example, do not have to fill out an application or follow any testing requirements. This is the same in many other states. As for seed, farmers are struggling to find reliable hemp seed, sometimes referred to as a cultivar. Many farmers pursue “high CBD” hemp cultivars, but CBD cultivars have a higher variance in delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Domestic hemp seeds have only been produced for a few years in the U.S. Many of our seed comes from foreign countries such as the Ukraine and Netherlands. This means that domestic grown seed has a lot of “what-if” when considering the THC/CBD concentration and germination rate. In the U.S., industrial hemp has to contain less that 0.3% THC. This means that if your crop tests above 0.3% THC then you have to destroy it. Hemp seeds that are grown for fiber or seed oil typically contain little to no THC, and they contain small amounts of CBD. This is because the plant has been breed to produce strong fiber, not resinous flower, which contains the highest concentration of THC and CBD. When following the “0.3% THC rule” you have to avoid hemp cultivars that are new, or untested. This is typically seen when buying high CBD hemp seeds. In Colorado, many farmers have been forced to destroy their crop simply because their hemp tested above 0.3% THC, meaning it was “hot.”. This can be hard to avoid as the industry is in its infancy, but there are a few precautions you can take to avoid testing “hot.” I have created this article to help growers find the right seed for their crop. I will focus on Colorado because they were the first to enter the U.S. hemp industry, and they currently have effective regulations and governing bodies in place. Through trial and error, Colorado has seen relative success in their state program. Regulation Regulating the distribution and sale of hemp seed has been the most difficult part of hemp legalization. In 2016, Colorado published the first “Certified Hemp Seed” list in the U.S. They only listed high fiber and high seed cultivars. This meant that high CBD hemp was not included on the list. Since then, the Colorado Department of Agriculture has released one other list for 2018. This list contained more companies, but no “high CBD” cultivars. As of 2019, the USDA announced a “Plant Variety Protection Program” for “seed propagated hemp varieties.” This is the first time hemp has been included in a protection program. This is good news for growers in need of reliable hemp seed. Until the list is published, farmers need to be cautious. In Colorado, companies that sell hemp seed must be registered as a “seed labeler” meaning that the company is registered with the state and they have provided the necessary testing requirements to show that the seed will not produce THC above 0.3%. This is a step in the right direction. However, this does not guarantee that the farmer will have no chance of growing hemp above 0.3% THC. There are many factors to consider when buying and growing seed. For example, weather and fertilizer have been known to cause a spike in THC. If a farmer gives their hemp too much fertilizer, too close to harvest, this could spike the THC. Other instances have occurred when farmers wait to harvest their crop till later in the Fall. The longer you wait to harvest, the higher the chance of your crop being “hot.” There are a few steps you can take as a farmer to insure that you are buying reliable hemp seed. In Colorado, only buy seed from “seed labelers” or “seed dealers.” This means that they have been approved by the state. When purchasing, each package should have a labeled “certification.” This should include the germination rate as well. This can be helpful for protecting your crop when planting. If your germination rate does not match the stated germination rate on the package, then you have the ability to file a complaint with the state and potentially seek restitution. As stated in the CDA memo to seed purchasers, “Until the Industrial Hemp industry matures, buyers of industrial hemp seed must beware and become educated. Even though related, seed law and industrial hemp law are separate. Variability in the amount of THC produced by seed varieties and rooted cutting clonal strains is not governed by seed law. If the THC level of plants produced from a lot of seed goes above 0.3% THC, it is the industrial hemp registrant’s responsibility to stay in compliance with the rules of the industrial hemp program.” This statement can be disconcerting for potential farmers. It basically states that industrial hemp law and seed law are different. Seed purchasers still have the ability to buy “non-certified” seed. It is the buyers responsibility to be aware of this risk from buying seeds. Buying “certified” seed is not mandatory. However, Colorado hemp registrants have to include a “statement of verification” stating that they believe their seed will not exceed 0.3% THC. The risk from growing high CBD cultivars has led many farmers to focus on high fiber and high seed oil cultivars instead. In an email I wrote to the Colorado Department of Agriculture, I asked “What is needed to be included in the "Statement of Verification" to prove that my seeds are under 0.3%?” Their reply was, “Write a statement that says you believe your planted material will not exceed .3%. We just need a simple statement of you verifying you did some research and know what you are planting.” This can leave a lot of room for error when farmers are buying seed. High CBD Hemp As mentioned above, high CBD hemp varieties are rarely “certified.” State regulators are aware of the high variance of THC contained in CBD cultivars. Even if the THC concentration was at 2%, the user would not feel any psychoactive effect. But, due to federal law, 0.3% THC is the federal requirement for industrial hemp. Many plant breeders have found that it is very difficult to breed high CBD cultivars with minimal THC. Typically, both of the cannabinoids, THC and CBD, behave the same when grown. They are both naturally produced and concentrated in the hemp “flower.” Currently, this makes growing hemp CBD difficult for small farmers and even large corporations. There is still a level of risk assumed when growing CBD. This is especially true for first-year hemp registrants in Colorado. Each registrant is subject to a state test administered by a state official. The state official will give you a 7-10 day notice before arriving at your farm. During that test, if any portion of your crop tests above 0.3% THC, then you have to destroy your whole crop. This is why it is so important for first-time hemp farmers to find reliable hemp seeds. Finding What’s Best In conclusion, there are a few takeaways from this article that will help you get on the right track when buying seed. First, when buying high CBD cultivars, make sure the company you are buying from has all of the necessary test results. This should include a CBD/THC concentration and terpenoid analysis. The tests should be from the mother plant, this is the plant that produced the seeds you are considering buying. If not, there is a stronger possibility that your seeds will produce a THC concentration above 0.3%. Second, when buying hemp seed for fiber or seed oil, use the CDA Approved Certified Hemp Seed list here. Other states have varying “certified” lists, but Colorado has been in the industry longer meaning their approval process may be more thorough. Lastly, don’t forget about the term “Buyer Beware.” It is important for hemp seed purchasers to be well informed on the seeds they are buying. Do your research on the company. Look for any bad customer experiences or reviews on the web, and make sure the company has the proper test results. Farmers recognize that CBD is currently the most profitable hemp market. That being said, growing hemp CBD is the most risky when considering the definition of industrial hemp being “under 0.3% THC.” This hasn’t stopped farmers from entering the market, but it has created more room for failure. Take the term “Buyer Beware” seriously when considering CBD as your next cash crop. I hope this article will help your farm find the best seed to grow. Happy Hemping!
